An intriguing, if occasionally superficial, look at the psychology behind the yearning to be something other than what we are – for what Phillips calls ‘our unlived lives’. The implications of prioritising our wished-for lives above our actual lives is fascinating, but Phillips tends to draw his case studies from literature rather than life, and his book falls into the gap somewhere between rigorous psychological analysis and great literary criticism.
