  Intelligent cultural guide that is much the best introduction for the serious sightseer. Elegantly descriptive and thorough - it covers Edirne, Bursa and Iznik as well - it is highly recommended.

  These very popular guides, with their photos and excellent mapping, give a really good overview of the city which makes exploring easy. The drawback is that once having got you to a place the supplemental information is a bit limited. Usefully, it covers excursions outside Istanbul as far as Edirne and Bursa and has a detachable map of Istanbul.

  Listings based guide, i.e. all the restaurants are reviewed together rather than being arranged by area. This guide excels in its practical information but is more limited as a sight-seeing companion.

  A lovely walking guide to the monuments and sites of Istanbul accompanied by stories and a history of the city. Perfect for the sightseer although should be bought alongside a practical guide and a decent map.
