  These very popular guides, with their photos and excellent mapping, give a really good overview of the city which makes exploring easy. The drawback is that once having got you to a place the supplemental information is a bit limited. Usefully, it covers excursions outside Istanbul as far as Edirne and Bursa and has a detachable map of Istanbul.

The only drawback is that having got you to a place the supplemental information is limited. This volume contains good colour coded sections on all regions of the city.

  Strong on photography and mapping, DK give a great overview of St Petersburg. Detailed practical information is limited however. Contains good colour-coded sections on all regions of the city.

It gives an overview of remarkable clarity that is highly recommended for planning. Those who value greater depth should look also to the Cadogan and Rough guides.
