This year’s Man Booker prize has gone to Paul Beatty for his satirical novel The Sellout.
The story centres around a young black man living in the fictional suburb of Dickens in Los Angeles. After the death of his father, he attempts to right the wrongs in his life with an outrageous plan to bring back slavery and reinstate segregation in the local high school – a plan that lands him in the Supreme Court.
The Guardian called it ‘the most lacerating American satire in years’, whilst the Sunday Times said ‘it will make you laugh, but most of all it will make you think’.
