War in the Val D’Orcia, Iris Origo’s diary of the war years 1943-1944 lived with her husband at La Foce, her beloved Tuscan estate, is rightly celebrated. It ends with the thought that hope is in the air. Now published for the first time her earlier diaries from 1939-1940, A Chill In the Air, capture the colder bleakness of Italy’s disastrous descent into war.

Iris Origo’s granddaughter, Katia Lysy, discusses her grandmother’s life and work with prize-winning biographer Lucy Hughes-Hallett, who wrote the introduction to the new volume, and whose acclaimed novel, Peculiar Ground, is published in paperback this month.
