Love of Country explores the magnetic pull of the Hebrides to saints and sinners, artists and writers and the islands’ unique position at the centre of a network of ancient shipping routes, which has led to a history of cultures colliding and merging. Madeleine travelled to these remote islands over six years and looks at their place in the imaginations of England and Scotland.
We welcome Patrick Barkham to chat to Madeleine. His own book, Islander, was described by the FT as a “wonderfully warm-hearted social, natural and above all literary history of the islands that surround the larger island of Britain”.
