In her new book In Montparnasse, Sue Roe chronicles a time of great artistic experimentation when in a corner of Paris Surrealism emerged. As well as looking at the work of Duchamp, the eccentric and avant-garde Dada movement, Man Ray’s ground-breaking photography and the arrival of Salvador Dali, she brings to life the salons, the vibrant cafe life and maelstrom of friendships and affairs that birthed the movement. Joining her in conversation is journalist and fellow historian Kathryn Hughes, whose much-praised book Victorians Undone was published in paperback last year.
