Her Finest Hour: The Heroic Life of Diana Rowden, Wartime Secret Agent
Wednesday 26th April at 6:30pm |
Daunt Books Hampstead |
As an agent with the Special Operations Executive (SOE), Diana Rowden was dropped into France alongside Noor Inayat Khan, and worked in the Resistance stronghold of the Franche-Comté department. Hunted at every turn by the Gestapo, Diana worked tirelessly for the Allied war effort, playing a part in the sabotage of the Peugeot factory at Sochaux and delivering frequent radio messages.
In 1943, betrayed by one of her own colleagues, Diana was arrested by the Gestapo, and later died in a concentration camp. Although she was mentioned in despatches and awarded an MBE and the Croix de Guerre, Diana Rowden has all but vanished from the annals of Second World War history. Historian Gabrielle McDonald-Rothwell, having gained access to newly declassified material, seeks to redress the balance with Her Finest Hour: The Heroic Life of Diana Rowden, Wartime Secret Agent, the first full-length biography of Diana Rowden.
